Brief Abstract:

A positive cultural environment in nursing is vital to achieving quality outcomes. The Nursing Culture Assessment Tool (NCAT) captures general aspects of nursing’s occupational subculture with results that can be used to advance care practices and outcomes. The subculture’s influence was explored as part of a clinical trial (National Institute of Nursing Research/National Institute of Aging R01 NR016001-01A1) investigating optimal repositioning intervals when introducing and using resident activity monitoring technology in 3 nursing homes. Nursing staff’s NCAT survey responses (pre/post intervention) capture changes in staff perceptions about their work relationships and environment. Comparisons are provided of pre/post changes in NCAT scores in relation to repositioning care practices and pressure ulcer prevention outcomes.
